About us
Born of a passion shared between a sister and a brother.
I-CARE was founded as a nonprofit charitable trust by Dr. Shiranee Pereira in 2004 in Chennai (Reg No. 1559/2004).
Dr. Shiranee Pereira is a research scientist by profession and an ardent animal lover who has been in the field of animal care and animal rights for the last thirty plus years. To know more about her, please visit shiraneepereira.com. I-CARE was born for the passion she shared with her brother Pradeep Pereira — an animal lover and senior data analyst and programmer by profession.
Deeply dedicated to the cause of replacing animals in laboratories and rehabilitating those animals used in research and testing, in the last twenty plus years I-CARE has left an indelible mark in laboratory animal care and their welfare. While hundreds of dogs and horses were rehabilitated and continue to be, I-CARE mooted and brought to practice life-changing national policies in India — in the use of equines in the production of immuno-biologicals including Anti-Snake Venom Serum production using horses and mules, and in limiting the use of dogs (beagles) in testing and their rehabilitation.
I-CARE has left a track of change and unerasable footprints in the field of laboratory animal care. To know more about our work, see A legacy of compassion and change.
Our three-pronged mission
- To teach and propagate the science of alternatives to the use of animals in biomedical research, toxicity testing and life science education.
- To raise the bar in giving animals the dignity, respect and rights they so deserve by promoting the powerful science of Animal Assisted Healing and Therapy.
- To do whatever it takes to alleviate the pain and suffering of animals when found in distress or pain.
